Mother's day is just around the corner....
Check out the "small works" file for some special gift possibilities. Since I not longer take small works like these to galleries or shows.....you can get a great buy. Available with or without frames. Only available directly from my studio....or online.
Small works can be great gifts.....display them on a small table top easel or perhaps lean them against the books on your bookshelf.
Art Marketing 101 ...... today's world
| 12 April, 2012 06:37
Although most professional artists would prefer that we could "roll back the calendars" to the days when a real-life bricks and mortar gallery could handle all of their work.....and need I say it..... the bookkeeping, display, public press releases, publicity, shows and shop talk, hanging, and even just turning on the lightbulbs. Unfortunately, it seems that the information age has caused a huge shift in our way of doing business.
It appears that ONLINE Galleries are here to stay. They will be be used by many artists as mere "portfolios" of their works. Others will decide to publish their prices online for some works, and keep other works for the rotations into galleries. This business of whether to publish prices has been perhaps the most confusing of all elements to everyone. Ultimately, some bricks and mortar galleries may shy away from handling your work, while others will laud your "transparency". One thing to remember, my smaller works 8" x 10" and under, rarely go to a gallery these days.....so they are well priced. CHECK OUT THE SMALL WORKS FILE.....they are priced especially for online and studio sales.
Most of us walk into a shop and hope to see prices posted. It gives you an uncomfortable feeling when you must "ask" for the price. You wonder if there is a different price for different people, etc. So taking a page out of our traditional shopping habits.......I have decided to go back to my original concept of publishing a number of prices online. Consider that similarly sized pieces are probably not too far off from those that have prices published. In addition, I am happy to provide a price list for various sizes, just ask.
Artists today work doubly hard since they are not only artists, but must do all of the things that the traditional galleries always did. Many of us have our own galleries in our studios where customers will make appointments for viewing works. We photograph our own works, we frame it, we do all the online promotions, follow the market, evaluate all the various aspects of running a business.....in addition to the art production itself. We hang the art, rotate the works, have open studio events.....the list is endless. I personally, have never worked harder in my previous career life.
Since I am both running a gallery and painting, the prices will be the same......whether online or in a bricks and mortar gallery. If you buy a piece online, there will be shipping and handling added after the shipping location is determined.
Many people are hesitant to buy without first seeing the artist's works in person. To that end, I will continue to put works in local or even not-so-local galleries and shows. After you see the quality of the works, you will be more comfortable with the idea of online purchasing of that artist's work. Or better yet "try-out" online purchasing using paypal.
I need not tell you about framed vs. unframed. But perhaps you are unaware that the quality of a frame can be anything from a craft store item to the best that money can buy. If you would like to purchase a piece online, a frame can easily be removed before shipping or delivery. That way you can frame it as you prefer. (perhaps save a bit on the shipping too). So if a work is marked "framed" inquire about the details.
Ask questions if you are unsure about other details. I look forward to helping you with your acquisition If you are returning customer, please let me know. In that way I can keep you up-to-date on special events.

THE WHITE SHOW: Stretching the "White" Envelope

My Thoughts about THE WHITE SHOW
I was asked to help curate THE WHITE SHOW, opening today in Oxford, Pa.
I had to ponder this carefully before accepting. Coming up with new works that address the subject WHITE was going to be difficult for artists without the usual lead-time. In addition, I wanted to walk through this process and have a plan of my own for new works on short notice.
I was told that the interpretation of WHITE was largely left up to the individual artists. For those of us who normally paint with lots of bold color, this was going to be a challenge.
I evaluated my current work and figured a way to use more "white" than ever before. It was helpful to have a design background, since I would be pulling ideas from both my art and design experience, to process this innovative concept. In the color planning stages, various past works with animals painting was helpful. White with lots of neutral grays and umbers woven in. It was difficult to imagine my usual landscapes working primarily with White. So abstracts would rule the day. Starting with small format studies, larger sizes evolved. Most works would be executed in oil. Acrylic the second choice, as the show drew near.
With my own plan now clearly in hand, I agreed to co-curate this show with local artist Victoria Vinton King. A number of local, regional artists have contributed to this show. In addition, I invited, Charles Jos. Biviano from Richmond, Virginia and Tom Hlas from Philadelphia. Biviano has shown in New York, and both Biviano and Hlas have developed a national presence.

PAINTING WHAT YOU LOVE...

PAINTING WHAT YOU LOVE...
Sage advice for those who desire painting as a means of expression....
As an artist you have to ask yourself just what is it that you LOVE.
After a number of years at this particular craft, I have narrowed my particular passions down to a core group of subjects that tickle my fancy.
COLOR.....I .dream in color, have memories of color and continue to look for subject to hang this particular passion on. Sometimes, I like to address even the monochromatic nuances of color. Or the subtle "grayed-off" colors that designers and the French love. Even flowers are a means of hanging a joyous feel for a particular color.
DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE...Although I have moved away from design as a profession.....I continue to love all the nuances of good design. The 3 dimensions of it will always excite me. And I love nothing more than getting into a space for the full experience. Having worked with restoration, I learned to love the colors of that period as well as the fashions colors of the day.
COUNTRY PURSUITS....I love a country lifestyle. The beautiful landscapes, The dogs, the walks in the fields, following Bassett Hounds in the chase of neighborhood rabbits. Following the foxhunt. Sparkling sunrises and sunsets. The smells of the newly plowed fields and hay making day. All of these sensual pleasures inform my work.
ANIMALS ...The expressions, the eye contact, the personalities. There is a reason that they are called "Man's best friend" (& woman's!). I have the same feelings for the human figure, and continue to explore this area.
ABSTRACTIONS.......Always loved getting off the track for a little serendipitous exploration. This is probably the most visceral pleasure of all. Tapping into your subconscious and just letting it flow....following the paint to see where it will take you. I believe this helps strengthen an artists work.......so I let it flow.
MUSIC........When in the abstract mode, my early days singing and playing musical instruments........seem to step into the picture. The "beat" moves into the painting process. And frequently, the names of these pieces end in musical notations. Improvisation reigns. And city memories and atmosphere come into the picture.
STYLE...From realism, to impressionism, expressionism and abstract. I love them all. And I doubt that I will ever be a perfect fit for just one regimen. Each has a different form or means in which to express the nuances of a painting. Perhaps training as a designer, we learn to appreciate and work with so many different periods, that it is only natural that we desire an exploration into these areas on a regular basis. I have many architect and designer friends, that express the same thought.
INTERIORS......This is an area that I have a love/hate for as an artist. Perhaps it is just TOO close to my life as a professional designer. All those years at the drafting board......
STILL LIFES: Occasionally I have been inspired by a particular grouping of colors or memories that particular items might bring with them.
ANTIQUES... This is probably the driving force to explore traditional dark colors as backgrounds for some of my figurative paintings. These dark backgrounds look so "right" to my brain in a multitude of situations.
They become accents for the backdrops of our lives.
