My Thoughts about THE WHITE SHOW
I was asked to help curate THE WHITE SHOW, opening today in Oxford, Pa.
I had to ponder this carefully before accepting. Coming up with new works that address the subject WHITE was going to be difficult for artists without the usual lead-time. In addition, I wanted to walk through this process and have a plan of my own for new works on short notice.
I was told that the interpretation of WHITE was largely left up to the individual artists. For those of us who normally paint with lots of bold color, this was going to be a challenge.
I evaluated my current work and figured a way to use more "white" than ever before. It was helpful to have a design background, since I would be pulling ideas from both my art and design experience, to process this innovative concept. In the color planning stages, various past works with animals painting was helpful. White with lots of neutral grays and umbers woven in. It was difficult to imagine my usual landscapes working primarily with White. So abstracts would rule the day. Starting with small format studies, larger sizes evolved. Most works would be executed in oil. Acrylic the second choice, as the show drew near.
With my own plan now clearly in hand, I agreed to co-curate this show with local artist Victoria Vinton King. A number of local, regional artists have contributed to this show. In addition, I invited, Charles Jos. Biviano from Richmond, Virginia and Tom Hlas from Philadelphia. Biviano has shown in New York, and both Biviano and Hlas have developed a national presence.
